Unbelievable manta action at Manta Alley, South Komodo!

Somehow things you don’t really expect to see, make the greatest impressions. Not that an encounter with a prehistoric-looking Mola-Mola wouldn’t, but since we were all busy looking for the Mantas, it was a wonderful surprise, as this strange animal moved in to one of the cleaning stations in South Komodo. We had the privilege to watch it for five minutes or so, before it returned into the deep.

The Mantas got a bit more of our attention, as we moved up the Komodo Channel; even before jumping in, we got a nice preview of a big ray jumping completely out of the water! During the dive itself, we had the chance to see several Mantas playing in the (pretty healthy) current.

On the other side of the scale, we had an incredible amount of Nudibranches on this trip. Two kinds of Thecaceras, loads of Tambjas and a good selection of pretty much all the other ones. A clear favourite was the humongous Spanish Dancer, 50 cm or so, that we found during one of the nightdives. Complete with an onboard set of Imperial Shrimps.

Add close-up Dolphins, inquisitive Whitetip Sharks, massive Frogfish and an extremely rare Bobbit Worm, and this all adds up to a very memorable Komodo Safari!
