EAGLE RAYS!

Liveaboard trip 22/03/09 – 31/03/09

Mermaid I at Burma Phuket Thailand

Normally shy cretures, Eagle Rays very much keep their distance. Not so on this trip! At Black Rock, in Burma, we were approached by a pack of three. They seemed to be really interested in these weird, noisy things flapping around during their breakfast. In fact, we got to see them throughout the day, up close and personal!

In between these encounters, we enjoyed a virtual explosion  of Nudibranchs. And some real nice ones as well! Three kinds of Tambjas, Ornate Elysias, Snakey Bornellas (these can jump!) and a wide selection of Chromodoris, Glossodoris and Flabellinas. We also got to see Marble Rays, Whitetip Sharks and an inquisitive Leopard Shark at this divesite, far up north in the Mergui Archipelago.

More sharks at Three Islets – a bunch of Bamboo Sharks, hiding in the cracks, and a big Nurseshark in one of the little caves we have here.
Seemed to be mating season for Octopus, since we had a lot of action at several divesites. Beeing too busy to care about something as insignificant as a diver, we got plenty of photo opportunities. I DID feel a bit like a paparazzi, though...

We found ”The Fish Of Your Nightmares” – an Indian Walkman, at a divesite called Rocky One, slowly moving around over the sand using its clawlike fingers. Won’t win any beauty contests, that’s for sure...

At the southern divesites of Fanforest PInnacle and Western Rocky, we had quite a few Leopard Sharks, even at the nightdives. But also Tigertail Seahorses, including a very cute baby one, Devil Scorpionfish, Marble Rays and mating Cuttlefish.
