DANCING MANTAS!

Liveaboard trip 1– 10/2, 2010

BURMA SAFARI

Mermaid I

Manta

Already at dive number two this trip, we found ourselves in the middle of some awesome Manta action! Six of these beautiful creatures danced around us for more than an hour. And they were still there the following dive, adding a newbie (only a meter across) to the pack. A day to remember!

We had a wonderful day at Three Islets in southern Mergui; Bamboo Sharks, big Marble Rays, Tigertail Seahorses, Pineapplefish and a whole bunch of Ornate Ghost Pipefish.

Steaming north, at one of the Torres islands, we enjoyed yet another dive with our big flappy friends. This time they were REALLY big, though! As a matter of fact, beeing more than five meters across, probably the biggest we’ve ever seen here!

Having the big-stuff-fix temporarily out of the way, we concentrated more on things at the other side of the scale. Thorny Seahorses, Bent Stick Pipefish, Bunny Ears Nudibranchs, Snake Eels, more Ghost Pipefish and rare Harlequin Shrimps.

Nightdives are always good up in Burma, and we had plenty of excitement, with Barracudas, Marble Rays, Cuttlefish and Moray Eels all out catching dinner.

After a couple of very productive days, we were ready for some slightly more substantial encounters. So we set out with the objective of finding us some Sharks. Starting at Fanforest Pinnacle, we had a couple of Leopard Sharks, followed by Whitetips and Grey Reefs at Western Rocky and then topping off with two big Bowmouth Guitarsharks at one of the pinnacles nearby. Mission completed!
