LEOPARDS SHARKS!

Liveaboard trip 12/1 – 21/1, 2010

BURMA SAFARI

Mermaid I

Leopard Shark

The Leopard Shark is one of the most beautiful animals we have in the Andaman Sea. With its tail beeing almost half the length of the body, it elegantly and effortlessly moves over the reef. Normally not shy (rather the opposite as a matter of fact!) it’s a favourite among divers. We had the chance to interact with these sharks on a number of dives this safari.

We keep finding new things around Ba Wei Island; after the Seahorse Fiesta last time, we located an unreal, neon-pink-purple Robust Ghost Pipefish, drifting over the sand, a ball of juvenile Catfish, rare Nudibranchs, Bent Stick Pipefish and a Black-striped Snake Eel. Oh yeah, and the Seahorses were all still there…

Up in the far north, apart from a selection of reef sharks, we saw Mobula Rays (a smaller relative to the Manta Ray) flying in formation above our heads.

In the true adventurous spirit of Mermaid Liveaboards, we did an exploratory dive at a rock formation we’ve seen, but yet not dived. Turned out to be pretty good, with two big Grey Reef Sharks, schools of fish, a couple of Ribbon Eels and some nice Nudibranchs.

Rounding off with a four meter Manta at Koh Bon, it all adds up to a very productive trip.
