Since diving in the blue-water mangroves of Raja Ampat is such a unique experience, the only way I can think of describing it would be like swimming in the 3-D version of the Avatar movie. Completely surrealistic, and very very beautiful indeed! Acting as nurseries for all kinds of fish, we were surrounded by juvenile Barracudas, Needlefish, Batfish and Blacktip Reef Sharks .
In the adventurous spirit of Mermaid Liveaboards, we also headed for slightly deeper waters (in the mangroves you’re in a meter or two…) looking for more substantial creatures like Grey Reef Sharks, Giant Manta Rays and Yellowtail Barracudas. We had very good shark action at several of the seamounts up in the northern parts of Raja Ampat, with not only the Grey Reefs, but also Whitetip and Blacktip Reef Sharks.
Blessed with crystal clear water, the Magic Mountain in Misool was truly just that! With 50 meters visibilty, we enjoyed massive schools of Batfish, Barracudas, Jackfish, Rainbow Runners and colourful Fusilliers and Snappers. Not to mention all the sharks, including a couple of Wobbegongs, a bright pink Stonefish, two Turtles and a two-meter Banded Seasnake. Not bad for a morning dive!
