Icing on the Cake

Whale Raja Ampat

After another incredible trip though Raja Ampat on Mermaid II filled with breathtaking encounters with mantas, wobbegong, and shoals of colorful reef fish we thought there is no possible way there could be more. We were all wrong.

As we all relaxed around Mermaid II’s saloon and party deck as the boat motored onwards Whale Raja Ampattowards Sorong harbor we sat recounting the incredible dives over tea coffee and cold beers when we heard the one word that stops all conversations immediately on a boat, WHALES! The boat came to a sudden halt in the still water and as we scanned the horizon for the tell tale signs of whales. We didn’t didn’t have to wait long before we heard that deep woosh of air being abruptly exhaled from a massive being and saw the huge grey back of the byrdes whales that had surrounded the boat. There must have been close to ten of these large whales, and they broke the surface for several seconds in regular intervals completely unbothered by our cheers every time one of them emerged. This was no quick encounter either, they pod hung around for about twenty minutes and was the absolute perfect way to finish of an already unforgettable Raja Ampat trip. It was the icing on the cake.
