Marine Mammals

whale watching komodoKomodo is famous for its biodiversity in marine life, stunning coral reefs, challenging currents and big fish. What we tend to forget though is the fact, that it’s also a very good place for spotting cetaceans – marine mammals like whales and dolphins.

We start our exciting journey from Bali cruising along the North side of Sumbawa when the boat engine suddenly slows down. What is usually not a very good sign on an ordinary dive trip, get’s us all excited this time though: it can only mean that marine biologist and trip leader Charles Anderson has spotted something in the distance. Dolphin KomodoAnd indeed, here they are, dolphins!

But it wouldn’t be a dedicated whale, dolphin watching and snorkeling trip if we’d just leave it with that. After our 10 days cruise we can look back to phenomenal 11 different species of cetaceans spotted all the way from Bali via Sumba, Sumbawa, Moyo, Satonda, Gili Banta,Komodo and reverse. Spinner, Bottlenose, Spotted, Fraser’s, Risso’s and Indo Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins, Melonheaded, False Killer and Pilot Whales, followed by a Beaked Whale and last but not least several Sperm Whales.

A successful trip which we can hopefully even top off within the next 10 days with another whaleand dolphin watching adventure!
