We all know Komodo is famous for it’s mantas, but when you’re diving on any of it’s well
known manta sites such as Manta Alley or Takat Makasar, aka Manta Point, it’s difficult to tell just how may you are actually seeing. Unless you have a photographic memory where you can mentally log all the different belly patterns of the mantas that have passed over the top of you it’s difficult to say just how many mantas you actually saw on a dive. It could have just been the one circling you twenty times. We solved this problem on Mermaid II’s most recent Komodo trip after an absolutely incredible dive at Takat Maksar. Everyone came back from the dive with double digit reports but no one could say exactly just how many there were. As many of the encounters were from mantas on the surface, we took the drone up to get a more complete picture…and here it is.
