Departing from Maumere on the island of Flores, the Mermaid 1 embarked on a stunning journey, passing through breathtaking islands and majestic active volcanoes en route to the renowned dive sites of Alor.
Guests were treated to extraordinary encounters with rare marine life, such as the fascinating Sea Apple, a vibrant member of the sea cucumber family that uses its tentacles to filter feed in the shallows. The scorpionfish family also delighted the divers with its colourful and photogenic members, like the colourful Rhinopias. Despite their bright colours, these unique creatures easily camouflage themselves into their surroundings, making them skilled ambush predators.
One of the most memorable moments on this expedition was a land excursion to the island of Alor. After a 45-minute bus ride along winding roads, guests arrived at a traditional village of the Abui people, the largest ethnic group in the region. Once known as fearsome warriors, the Abui now warmly welcomed visitors, inviting them to partake in the rhythmic lego lego dance. Accompanied by the pleasant jingle of metal anklets, this dance showcased the vibrant traditions of the Abui tribe, which remained an integral part of the enchanting wonders of Alor Island.
This remarkable expedition encompassed the mesmerizing beauty of Alor’s dive sites, unforgettable encounters with marine life, and a delightful immersion into the rich cultural heritage of the Abui people.
