Wild Wonders of the Coral Triangle: A Biodiversity Adventure from Raja Ampat to Ambon

The Mermaid I just embarked on a special trip from Raja Ampat, through the Banda Sea and the Forgotten Islands, before concluding in Ambon. Traversing over 800 miles across 3 different seas over the course of 16 days.

Starting the trip in Raja Ampat, we enjoyed the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Big school of Barracudas patrolling the blue while the perfectly camouflaged Pygmy Seahorses quietly watching show from their Seafans and Wobbegong Sharks lays on the bottom, ready to ambush unsuspecting prey. Some lucky guests also had a great encounter with the majestic Reef Manta Rays circling their cleaning station

Before entering the Banda Sea, we made a quick stop at Koon. A remote island paradise east of the island of Seram well known for its schooling fish action. Right at the corner of the current swept plateau, we encountered a massive school of Midnight Snappers and Black Snappers, Parrotfish spawning and the massive residential school of Batfish.

Moving on the Banda Sea, each day was well spent diving the remote volcanic islands scattered across the vast Banda Sea. Although the hammerhead sharks eluded us once again, great dives were had by all as we enjoyed beautiful coral reefs, dramatic deep walls and overhangs teeming with life. This time around, the reefs were full of silversides and juvenile fusiliers. So much fish swimming around that you could barely see your dive buddy in front of you! Before leaving the Bandas, we also did a cultural visit to Banda Neira, the original spice islands, learning about its rich heritage and history.

The last leg of the trip was well spent in Ambon, as we went muck diving in the sand and rubble slopes of Ambon Bay. Critter hunting here is always fun as we encounter many different species of cephalopods, colorful crustaceans, nudibranchs, and frogfishes.
