Matthias has, since he was a kid, spent more time underwater than above so naturally he started diving in 2012. All thanks to a family vacation to Mabul and Sipadan just outside of Malaysian Borneo.
After the first dive at Sipadan, he told his divemaster that within five years he would be here working as a divemaster, 3 years later he started his career in Komodo instead and later on as an instructor on the Gili Islands.
During his time in Komodo he started taking photos underwater with a small compact camera ‘just for fun’. After doing some amazing macro sites he fell in love with all the tiny critters that Komodo biodiversity waters has to offer and wanted to grow as a photographer. After a year and a half of teaching diving all over South East Asia, he decided to start his own company and focus more on underwater photography.
Matthias works with an Olympus OMD EM5 MKII, Olympus Housing, YSD2 strobes and BigBlue VL9000p Video lights plus a DJI Mavic 2 PRO. He is set up for both wide angle and macro film and photography and aerial footage.
He is happy to help anyone with questions about photography and film and is available for courses on board Mermaid II.
