Our latest voyage through the islands of Komodo offered a beautifully balanced mix of wildlife encounters both above and below the surface. From dramatic coastlines and prehistoric reptiles to colourful reefs and glimpses of ocean giants, every day brought something unique.
The snorkelling throughout the region was nothing short of spectacular. From sprawling hard coral gardens to soft coral slopes teeming with life, each site offered something new. Turtles were regular companions, and one lucky snorkel delivered a brief encounter with two graceful manta rays gliding in from the blue.
Komodo’s famous dragons were on top form during our visits to both Komodo and Rinca Islands. We encountered multiple individuals wandering across the forest paths, active and alert they prowled the jungle floor. A boat ride into the iconic Horseshoe Bay gave us a different perspective, Komodo dragons roaming the beaches, their massive frames wandering the shore.
Out at sea, cetaceans were a constant presence. We encountered dolphins almost daily, with spinner dolphins playfully riding the bow and Risso’s, bottlenose and even false killer whales making appearances. A sighting of a blue whale at sunset was an unforgettable moment, a distant, towering exhalation giving way to the slow arch of its immense back. Towards the end of the trip, we met a large group of melon-headed whales. Though shy, a few individuals allowed us a fleeting underwater glimpse before slipping back into the depths.
This was a trip defined by contrast and wonder, coral gardens and ocean giants, dragons, and
dolphins. Komodo continues to surprise and inspire at every turn.
