This week’s voyage onboard the Mermaid I to Komodo and beyond was all about the mix! From dramatic landscapes above, prehistoric dragons, to beautiful coral reefs, fish actions, rare tiny critters to Sharks and Manta Rays. Even to the repeaters, Komodo is just full of surprises!
Some of the highlights include, one fine morning in Saleh Bay. We were treated with excellent visibility and four Whale Sharks circling us throughout the entire dive under one of the Bagans. It’s never a dull moment spending time with these magnificent gentle giants
As the moon was in its new phase, powerful currents brought the reefs to life. Incredible fish actions around the famous Crystal Rock in the north of Komodo with a big school of Fusiliers being hunted by Giant Trevallies and Whitetip Reef Sharks!
At the famous Manta Alley, around 15 Reef Manta Rays were seen circling above the cleaning station. It’s amazing to see these gentle giants gracefully gliding alongside us, feeding in the nutrient rich waters of South Komodo.
As night falls, tiny critters come out from their hiding, making the sandy slopes come to life. As always, we were finding many different species frogfishes, ghost pipefishes, nudibranchs, octopus and cuttlefish just to name a few
Of course, a trip to Komodo wouldn’t be complete without seeing Komodo Dragons. One fine morning we went to Loh Liang in the island of Komodo, trekked through some rugged yet picturesque landscape in search of these prehistoric reptiles. We were delighted to see three Komodo dragons around the hill, along with the usual Wild Boars and Deers.
