A Completely New Raja Surprise

Every season in Raja Ampat I’m totally blown away by what new surprises the region can deliver. First it was the world’s largest stingray, next it was Omura’s whales-the world’s newest classified species of whale-feeding next to Mermaid II, then it was a forty-five minute snorkel session with Raja Ampat’s first ever ocean sunfish, and finally last trip it was a hammerhead shark swimming along at five meters.

Raja Ampat is the record holder for world’s most diverse marine eco system so it should come as no surprise to have this iconic species of shark casually passing us along the reef tops. The only thing is is that these sharks are normally creatures of the deep and rarely come into the shallow reefs. To have one casually swimming along the shallows reef of Boo Windows, one of Raja’s most iconic dive sites, was truly a memorable surprise!
