Our latest trip took us through the thriving reefs of Raja Ampat, through Misool and the central region, revealing just how much diversity this paradise holds.
In Misool, life was on full display from the first dive. Plankton rich waters boost the abundance of life allowing an immense level of diversity to thrive here. Reefs carpeted in soft coral buzzed with activity, swarming clouds of fish swirled around us, as larger trevallies corralled and hunted them. A swirling tornado of jacks, accompanied by shoaling barracuda, toward over us before breaking formation and dancing around our divers. It was a feast of colour and motion everywhere.
In the Dampier Strait, the visibility improved, and the lively reefs performed before a backdrop of beautiful blue hues. Our attention shifted from the massing fishes to the search for the famous and elusive Wobbegong sharks began. Camouflaged beneath table corals these incredibly beautiful sharks decided to make an appearance as we encountered 4 individuals in one dive.
A highlight was our dive into the mangroves, where coral grows below the forest. Shimmering sunlight and glassy water made for the perfect experience. Juvenile reef fish sheltered in the shadows, and soft corals clung to the submerged roots. The scene was dreamlike, only improving when we encountered a large broad-club cuttlefish patrolling the base of the roots, its colours changing seamlessly to blend to its environment.
This trip wasn’t about chasing megafauna. It was about absorbing the rich abundance and colours of healthy coral reefs, something that’s sadly becoming harder to see around the world; but for the most part, here in Raja Ampat, the reefs are very much alive!
