Join Mermaid Liveaboards for an exciting adventure across the Banda Sea.
To fully explore the wonders of the Banda Sea, a liveaboard diving cruise is the way to go. Aboard premier and well-equipped MV Mermaid I and II, divers have the unique opportunity to access remote dive sites that are inaccessible from shore. The 12-day cruise takes divers on a journey exploring the diverse dive sites in Maumere, Alor, and the Banda Sea before concluding in Ambon.
Begin your cruise in Maumere on Flores Island and then on to Alor. After this you will head through the Forgotten Islands for fantastic wall dives and the chance for schooling hammerhead sharks.
About the dive sites
Alor: A Hidden Gem
After exploring the wonders of Maumere, the diving cruise continues to the lesser-known gem of Alor. Alor is a remote and tranquil paradise that offers some of the most unique and diverse diving experiences in Indonesia.
Alor’s underwater landscapes are captivating, featuring vibrant coral gardens, underwater pinnacles, and dramatic drop-offs. Divers can encounter an astonishing variety of marine species, from colorful nudibranchs and pygmy seahorses to elusive mimic octopuses and rare rhinopias. Along with these micro wonders, Alor also attracts larger pelagic species, making it an ideal destination for both macro and wide-angle photography enthusiasts.
The Banda Sea: A Diver’s Paradise
The Banda Sea, located in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, is a remote and pristine region that boasts a diverse marine ecosystem. Diving in this area provides access to untouched coral reefs, underwater volcanic formations, and incredible biodiversity. The crystal-clear waters of the Banda Sea offer excellent visibility, allowing divers to fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking underwater world.
Ambon: The Realm of Critters
As the diving cruise concludes in Ambon, divers are in for a treat. Known as the “Twilight Zone,” Ambon is a paradise for critter enthusiasts. The muck diving in this region is unparalleled, offering a glimpse into the fascinating and bizarre world of critters and macro life.
Divers can seek out peculiar creatures such as the Ambon scorpionfish, ghost pipefish, and wonderpus octopus, among many others. Ambon’s black sand slopes are teeming with life, and every dive promises a unique encounter with some of the ocean’s most elusive and extraordinary inhabitants.
Ambon’s Underwater Volcanic Attractions
Aside from the exceptional critter diving, Ambon also boasts a mesmerizing underwater volcanic landscape. Divers can explore the submerged lava flows and witness the fascinating transformation of marine life as it colonizes the volcanic terrain. Colorful soft corals, sponges, and sea fans now adorn what was once a desolate lava field, creating an otherworldly ambiance.
Encounters with Hammerhead Sharks
One of the main highlights of diving in the Banda Sea is the opportunity to encounter Hammerhead sharks in their natural habitat. These enigmatic creatures, known for their distinctive hammer-shaped heads, can be found patrolling the depths of the sea. Witnessing a school of Hammerhead sharks gliding gracefully through the water is an awe-inspiring experience that fills divers with a sense of wonder and admiration for the ocean’s most iconic predators.
While the encounter with the school of hammerhead sharks in Banda Sea between September and October is well known, both Mermaid I and II have encountered schools of hammerhead sharks in Alor in May.
Conservation and Responsible Diving
As with any wildlife encounter, it is essential to approach the Hammerhead sharks and other marine life with respect and consideration for their natural behavior. We encourage responsible diving practices and adherence to local conservation guidelines are paramount to protect the fragile marine ecosystem. Divers should avoid touching or disturbing the marine life and maintain a safe distance to ensure the safety of both divers and marine animals.

Pulau Reong is a small island on the northwest coast of Wetar and separated by a small channel only 700 metres wide. More walls, like many of the dive sites in the Banda Sea, covered in small soft corals but of a great variety of colours, with zillions of triggerfish of every species.
Cape Nunukae, about 6 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Reong, is a large ridge with slopes on both sides, covered with a hard coral reef on the shallow area of the ridge, with soft corals on the slopes in the deeper areas. There can be strong currents at the end of the ridge, where large aggregations of schooling fish can be found. Cruise overnight to the Damar Islands, 150 nautical miles.
