Raja Ampat: Crown Jewels of the Diving World

The Mermaid II Raja Ampat expedition, cruising through the iconic Dampier Strait and south to Misool, delivered an unforgettable journey through one of the most diverse and visually stunning marine environments on Earth. From vibrant reefs and world-class megafauna encounters to serene lagoon explorations and breathtaking viewpoints, this expedition perfectly captured the essence of Raja Ampat both above and below the surface.

From the very beginning, guests were immersed in the rhythm of liveaboard life—days shaped by diving, exploration, relaxation, and discovery. The Dampier Strait, known for its nutrient-rich waters and incredible biodiversity, provided exhilarating dives filled with action, while Misool’s
remote southern reefs offered pristine beauty and dramatic underwater landscapes. Each region brought its own character, ensuring every day felt fresh and rewarding.

One of the standout dive sites of the expedition was Sardine Reef at Sauwandarek Jetty, a location that consistently delights divers of all experience levels. The shallow waters beneath the jetty were alive with movement, as large schools of sweetlips gathered in tight formations, their yellow and white stripes shimmering as they moved gracefully in unison. The jetty structure itself created shelter and feeding opportunities, making it a hub of activity at all hours of the day.

Adding to the magic of Sauwandarek were the numerous turtles that seemed completely at ease in the presence of divers. Green and hawksbill turtles were seen gliding effortlessly through the shallows or resting calmly on the reef, allowing for close and memorable encounters. For many
guests, the combination of schooling fish, turtles, and vibrant coral growth made Sauwandarek Jetty a favourite site of the trip and a perfect introduction to Raja Ampat’s underwater abundance.

Another unforgettable highlight came at Four Kings, a renowned manta ray cleaning station. Divers descended with anticipation, positioning themselves carefully to observe one of the ocean’s most elegant spectacles. It wasn’t long before a manta ray appeared out of the blue, circling gracefully as it visited the cleaning station. Hovering effortlessly in the current, the manta allowed cleaner fish to go to work, offering divers prolonged and intimate views of this gentle giant.

Watching a manta ray up close is always a humbling experience. Its immense wingspan, fluid movements, and calm presence created a moment of shared stillness underwater. Cameras clicked and bubbles slowed as guests took in the encounter, fully aware that this was one of those rare
experiences that would stay with them long after the trip ended.

While the daytime dives delivered excitement and grandeur, the night dives revealed a completely different side of Raja Ampat. As darkness fell, guests eagerly prepared their torches and descended into a world transformed. One of the most consistent and delightful discoveries on these dives was the abundance of cuttlefish. Seen hovering, hunting, and communicating through rapid colour changes, cuttlefish captivated divers with their intelligence and otherworldly behaviour.

Some were spotted stalking prey across the sand, while others paused mid-water, pulsing with shifting patterns of colour and texture. Their ability to change shape and hue in an instant made each encounter unique, and many guests found themselves lingering, mesmerised, as these
remarkable creatures put on silent underwater displays.

Beyond diving, the expedition also showcased Raja Ampat’s extraordinary landscapes above the surface. Guests enjoyed two lagoon tours, venturing into hidden emerald-green lagoons tucked between towering limestone cliffs. These quiet excursions offered a peaceful contrast to the adrenaline of diving, allowing time to slow down and absorb the natural beauty of the region. Gliding through narrow passages by tender, guests were surrounded by sheer rock walls draped in lush vegetation, with crystal-clear water reflecting the sky above. The lagoons felt untouched and timeless, offering countless photo opportunities and moments of quiet appreciation. For many, these lagoon tours highlighted just how diverse and special Raja Ampat truly is—not only as a dive destination, but as a natural wonder in its own right.

One of the most memorable moments of the entire expedition came early one morning with a sunrise hike to the Piaynemo viewpoint. Rising before dawn, guests made the short but rewarding climb as the sky began to glow with soft hues of pink and orange. Reaching the viewpoint just as the sun crested the horizon, they were rewarded with a sweeping panorama of Raja Ampat’s signature karst islands scattered across calm, glassy waters.

As daylight spread across the seascape, the colours intensified—turquoise shallows, deep blue channels, and emerald islands creating a scene that felt almost unreal. It was a moment of quiet reflection and shared awe, perfectly capturing the spirit of exploration that defined the journey.

Throughout the expedition, weather conditions remained favourable, allowing guests to make full use of Mermaid II’s spacious decks. The sundeck quickly became a popular retreat between dives, offering a place to relax, enjoy the sea breeze, and share stories while cruising between destinations. Whether soaking up the sun or watching the islands drift by, guests appreciated the comfort and
atmosphere that liveaboard life provides.

As the Mermaid II continued her route through Dampier Strait and Misool, it became clear that this expedition delivered a rich and balanced experience. Thrilling dives with iconic species, serene surface excursions, and stunning viewpoints combined seamlessly with excellent conditions and a relaxed onboard environment.

By the end of the journey, guests left with more than just photos and dive logs. They carried with them memories of sweetlips swirling beneath Sauwandarek Jetty, a manta ray gliding effortlessly at Four Kings, cuttlefish dancing through torchlight on night dives, and the quiet beauty of hidden lagoons and sunrise vistas. The Raja Ampat expedition aboard Mermaid II once again proved why this region is considered one of the crown jewels of the diving world—offering wonder, diversity, and unforgettable moments at every turn.
