Significant Raja Ampat
Charted by a very merry Spanish group, we ventured into the wonderous national park of Raja Ampat. Spirits were high, and everyone was excited for what lay ahead. Mermaid 2 was full of life as our lively guests brought a taste of Spain with them to Raja, loaded with Spanish cuisine, cheeses, breads and cured meats time above the water were thoroughly enjoyed.
Our guest’s energy aboard was only matched by the enthusiasm in the water and excitement at the stunning sights we visited. While every trip in Raja is amazing, there are often significant moments on each trip that stand out, moments of wonder or moments of intrigue or perhaps just pure beauty. For this trip into Raja Ampat, we encountered a very relaxed and somewhat curious, Bump-Head Parrotfish, but of the enormous variety.
A goliath of the seas, this giant fish patrolled the reef, unbothered by our presence it grazed upon coral’s mere feet away from us. This was by far the largest individual we had seen in a while, perhaps its gargantuan size fuelled its confidence, as it was most certainly not afraid. This beautiful creature put on quite the show, turfing us sand and chomping on coral, making close passes by as though inspecting us. Raja Ampat often surprises us with incredible encounters such as this one.
