The Togian (or Togean) Islands are an archipelago of 56 islands and islets, in the Gulf of Tomini, off the coast of Central Sulawesi, in Indonesia. Some people claimed that Tomimi Bay is one of the calmest bays in the world. The three largest islands are Batudaka, Togian, and Talakatoh. All of the Togian Islands have amazing white sandy beaches that are as of today unspoiled by masses of tourism. There are 37 villages on the islands settled by the Bajau people (Sea Gypsies).

Due to the position of the Gulf of Tomini, with the entrance of the bay facing east, the sea is not affected by the northeast monsoon (November to March). The seas are very calm throughout these months. The depth in Gulf of Tomini, except around the islands, goes from 1.000 mtrs to 4.000 mtrs.
The Togian Islands are located in the middle of the coral triangle, therefore offering some of the best diving in the world, containing up to 37% of the identified reef fishes and up to 76% of all known corals.

A Rare Route Awaits: Lembeh – Gorontalo – Togian

Begins in the legendary Lembeh Strait, the world’s muck diving capital, where volcanic black sands hide rare and fascinating critters such as pygmy seahorses, frogfish, and countless other tiny marvels.

From there, we sail to Gorontalo, home to the dramatic walls of Olele Marine Park, adorned with vibrant corals and the famous “Salvador Dali” sponge, found only in Tomini Bay. At Botubarani, you’ll have the unforgettable experience of diving and snorkelling with majestic whale sharks.

The adventure continues in the Togian Islands, When it comes to diving, the Togians have it all!!! Pinnacles, atolls, fringing reefs, barrier reefs, walls, steep slopes, coral gardens, muck diving and even a WWII wreck, Bomber B-24. As for marine life, you will be amazed by the variety and diversity of reef fish (over 1.000 species of reef fish), corals and sponges. There are massive schools of blacktail barracudas, bigeye trevallies and snappers, as well as huge napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, tunas, and groupers. And plenty of small critters for those macro lovers.

As part of a cultural visit during a break between dives, we stopped by a small village on Pulau Papan, home to the Bajau people. It was a unique opportunity to experience their fascinating way of life firsthand and gain insight into the traditions and daily rhythms of this legendary seafaring community.

Finally, our journey returns to North Sulawesi’s Tanjung Flesko, where endless hard coral gardens stretch as far as the eye can see—an awe-inspiring finale before we conclude back in Lembeh.

Day 1

Check-in on board Mermaid I. Once all guests are on board a safety briefing will be given. If all the guests are on board by 12,00 hours, you have the chance to do 1 extra dives at Lembeh Strait in some fabulous muck dives with critters galore. Cruise overnight to Tanjung Flesko, 80 nautical miles.

Day 2

Diving around Tanjung Flesko offers an exciting mix of topography and conditions, with exposed pinnacles, steep slopes, and walls washed by lively currents that create ideal drift-dive experiences. As you glide along, the reef shifts between colourful soft-coral gardens and patches of healthy hard corals. In the more sheltered corners of the reef, keen-eyed divers can look for pygmy seahorses, while the vibrant coral slopes host critters such as leaf scorpionfish, nudibranchs, ribbon eels and more. Cruise overnight to Gorontalo, 85 nm.

Day 3

Gorontalo is one of several places in Indonesia where there are regular encounters with whale sharks. The local Whale Shark Center conducts research and monitors the individuals that visit the area, and they are also the team who coordinates both diving and snorkeling with these gentle giants. Typically, we enjoy one or two unforgettable dives with the whale sharks before moving on to an afternoon dive afternoon diving around the small village of Olele. The dive sites here feature dramatic walls and steep slopes with ridges, richly covered in sponges and soft corals, while the shallows offer beautiful gardens of healthy hard coral. Olele is especially famous for its unique Dali sponges, which sprout from the walls in striking, sculptural forms. After the third dive, Mermaid will begin cruising toward Una Una, the volcanic island at the far eastern edge of the Togian archipelago. Cruise overnight to Una Una, 95 nautical miles.

Day 4

Una Una, home to Colo Volcano and some of the richest reefs in the entire Togian archipelago. Unlike the rest of the islands, Una Una’s shoreline is framed by striking black and grey volcanic sand, a dramatic reminder of the last major eruption in 1983. The volcano itself rises gently to about 500 meters, crowned by a wide 2-kilometer caldera surrounded by lush forest. We will begin on the east side of the island, visiting signature pinnacles such as Fishomania and Sageru Rock. This area also offers lively reefs and the dramatic “Black Forest,” an impressive coral formation.

Day 5

Early in the morning we begin our crossing toward the main Togian Islands, Batuduka and Togean, where we will explore some of the beautiful wall dives along the northern atolls, such as Goa Goa, Pulau Taupan, Mimpi Dinding or Taipei Wall. These dive sites have beautiful wall sculpted by steady currents, creating a series of dramatic overhangs covered in sponges and soft corals. Out in the blue, there is always a chance to spot eagle rays and the occasional reef shark. Afterwards, we will snorkel the famous Jellyfish Lake on Pulau Togean, a serene and otherworldly experience swimming among countless stingless jellyfish.

Day 6

We will be exploring the surroundings of Waleabahi Island, a vibrant area filled with pinnacles and ridges that offer excellent chances to spot reef sharks. Visibility is often crystal clear, and the lively currents make the dives especially exciting. At night, we will have the opportunity to search for the endangered Walea pygmy seahorse, a rare and treasured highlight.

Day 7

Pulau Dondola and the Dondola Seamount feature stunning wall formations with dramatic overhangs and vibrant coral gardens on the reef top. These sites offer chances to encounter pelagic species such as tuna, Spanish mackerel, reef sharks, and eagle rays. After 2 dives, we will start the overnight crossing back to Tanjung Flesko, 125nm.

Day 8

Mermaid is now back in the beautiful area of Tanjung Flesko, an area rich with diving opportunities. Besides the vibrant reefs, this region features pinnacles and rocky outcrops that break the surface, often influenced by tricky currents and surge. These dynamic conditions make the site especially attractive for pelagic encounters. After the third dive, Mermaid will begin her journey back toward Lembeh for the final day of diving.
After the last dive, we will cruise overnight to Lembeh, 80 nm.

Day 9

The final day of diving will take place in Lembeh, the muck diving capital of the world. The Lembeh Strait offers some of the best muck diving in all of Indonesia. Its black, white, and grey sand habitats are packed with the strangest and most fascinating critters imaginable. From frogfish and a wide variety of octopus species to spiny devilfish, countless nudibranchs, and an endless array of rare macro life, Lembeh is a true paradise for underwater photographers and critter enthusiasts.

Disembark at 8 am after breakfast, Mermaid Liveaboards staff will transfer you to the airport or your hotel in Lembeh.
